<Title> Advanced Cementing Techniques to Prevent Annular Gas Migration

<Speaker> Akira Endo (Halliburton Japan representative/ PSL Operations Manager, Halliburton)

<Abstract>

In recent years, annular gas issues have become a growing concern in the Middle East, making well abandonment increasingly challenging. As a result, stricter construction standards are being enforced for new well drilling to prevent such problems. For example, certain sites now mandate full cement placement in the annular space between the surface casing and conductor casing or between the surface casing and production casing.
To achieve this, it is essential not only to use gas-migration-resistant cement but also to ensure complete cement placement. Ideally, these operations should be conducted without exceeding the equivalent circulating density (ECD) of the formation. However, many regions contain depleted formations, sand layers, or salt formations that can trigger lost circulation.
To address these challenges, the Obex series, which combines Casing Packers and Stage Tools, has been developed. While Casing Packers may often be associated with inflatable packers, the Obex series utilizes element compression to form a seal in the annulus, ensuring long-term sealing integrity.
These solutions enable complete cement placement in the annular space of double-casing sections. In Japan, they are expected to be applied not only in oil wells but also in geothermal and CCUS wells, helping to establish a fully cemented barrier in the annular space.

<Title> Enhanced Monitoring Strategies for Geothermal Wells and CO2 Storage: Field Case Studies

<Speaker> Markus Chin (Senior Project Manager for DataSphere AsiaPac)

<Abstract>

This session explores case studies demonstrating optimization of geothermal well and CCUS well integrity surveillance with enhanced monitoring techniques, distributed temperature and acoustic monitoring. For geothermal applications, case studies will showcase how fiber optic monitoring optimizes well performance through distributed temperature sensing. These applications demonstrate how surveillance assist operators to maximize energy yield and improve operational efficiency in various geothermal fields. In CCUS operations, sample case examples highlight the implementation of distributed acoustic and temperature sensing for well integrity monitoring. These examples illustrate how advanced monitoring techniques enable early detection of potential leakage pathways and verify the mechanical integrity of CO2 storage complexes, ensuring safe and reliable carbon storage operations.
