<Title> Introduction of a line shaft pump to the Minami-Kayabe geothermal power plant

<Abstract>

Binary power generation has attracted attention in recent years as a means of sustainably utilizing geothermal resources and plays an important role in geothermal power plants. The downhole pump that pumps up the geothermal fluid that serves as the heat source for the binary power generation unit is an essential element for the efficient operation of the binary power generation unit and is important for the effective use of geothermal resources.
The well drilled in the Minami-Kayabe area of Hakodate City, Hokkaido, was found to have high permeability, but problems with scale precipitation and production through self-flowing (airlift) made it difficult to achieve the target power output in the long term. Since this was evaluated as difficult, a line shaft-type downhole pump for pumping hot brine was considered, which could solve these problems. After that, a line shaft type downhole pump was installed in the production well, and after confirming its performance in various unit tests, the binary power plant that adopted the line shaft type downhole pump started commercial operation in May of this year, the first in Japan.
In this presentation, we will mainly introduce an overview of downhole pumps and an example of the introduction of a line shaft type downhole pump, which was introduced for the first time at a geothermal power plant in Japan.

<Title> Overview of the EGS Project at the Okuaizu geothermal field

<Abstract>

Problems such as steam shortages due to an imbalance between production and natural recharge, and corrosion of the facilities due to superheated steam or secondary strong acidic fluids caused by overheating of the reservoir have occurred in the Oku-Aizu geothermal field. These cause the reduction of output. One of the ways to address this problem is recharge technology, a type of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) technology that has been successful overseas. In this region, artificial recharge tests using this recharge technology were conducted from 2013 to 2023 as part of a commissioned research project on geothermal power generation technology, “Geothermal Reservoir Evaluation and Management Technology,” by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security. Here, we will introduce an overview of the results obtained from the demonstration test in the Oku-Aizu geothermal field.
